Just reinstalled my 292 v8 back into 1964 f100. Got her to crank and run, smooth idle with no noticable misfires, etc...
When setting the timing I notice the engine idle was up a bit,but would not let me decrease the timing from about 25 to 30 btdc???
I tried to tinker with the carb idle but this will not compensate for the high setting needed, truck seams to shut down when lower tiiming is attempted.
Dist. went back in smoothly at tdc, all reference marks made when removed lined up when reinstalled.
Have I gotten somthing just slightly out of place? Any Ideas on this would be appreciated.
However, my buddy has a 65 Stang with a 289. After rebuilding the beast he stuck it in and was having similar problems. So he called me (dunno why) and I went over to see what I could do. We checked his plug wires first....only 5 were good. After that the idle was still to high, so we adjusted the cable idle and the fuel air mixture on the carb. Fixed it right up
I was having the same problem, I could take the idle screw out completely and the rpm wouln't come down, it was sucking air at the base of the carb. fixed the leak and now the idle works and the timing in at the correct mark. Just a thought.

Be sure that the vacuum advance line is disconnected and cap the port on the carb to set the initial timing. If the vacuum advance is connected, it could advance the timing at idle and cause it to run faster. You may want to get an adjustable vacuum advance. When I rebuilt my engine the stock cannister advanced the timing to 38deg. at idle! Set initial timing then connect the vacuum advance and see what it reads. I believe It should be 6 - 8deg at idle.
Thanks for the advice, I have since found the carb has no vaccume pull to dist. Old carb, will replace with an edelbrock unit. Also, the coil doesnt seem to be chargeing the plugs correctly...its out of here! Will replce the points with a crane electronic unit and crane coil. I pulled vaccume on dist with a hand-help pump and the advance worked well, vaccume held at diaphram also.
I think the carb and coil are the biggest problems at this piont. I will let you know how these changes work.
Thanks again, Ed
