There's a 5.0 and 4r70w in my 97 Explorer, but it came that way. Should be able to go that route, or even a 351w based engine with some fabrication.

'96' was the first year of the 5.0L in Explorers, about any model and came in 2 or 4 wheel versions. Have to be careful when mixing different years. Could even use a 2001 but switch the wiring and computer to a '97' to keep the wiring a lot simplier. Later ones get their speed signal from a different source and fuel systems different. Take it you have the 4 wheel, if so even the 5.0L motor mounts work.
Oh, and Welcome!

I know of a lot of guys swaping the Explorer V-8 into the Ranger and have no problem. Your Explorer is made to accept the V-8. Never looked to see what the 4.0l uses for a transfer case but the V-8 would fit. Not sure about the crossmembers either but not a big problem. Never looked at the main wiring connection from engine to chassis on the '97' but the '98-2000 are identical and plug right in between the Ranger and Explorer.

On the subject: Are there any other engines that fit the 5R55E?
