I'm needing to know if the 1968 ford f100 had pre-punched holes in the fire wall and under the dash to just pull out an automatic tranny, and bolt on a clutch assembly and slap in a manual tranny. I heard somewhere that they did have it, but I'd like to find out, me not being a fan of automatic transmissions I would like to put a manual in.
Sincerely, Zman101
Well..under the dash..the whole auto pedal assembly has to come ourt so you can get one with a clutch. Then its just getting the z bar and linkages for the fork..depending what type of clutch u use
Switching the automatic pedal assembly to a manual pedal assembly is pretty straight forward and is just a matter of removing bolts and re-installing them. I would be more concerned with the steering column. Remember, an automatic transmission has a neutral safety switch on the column and the manual tranny does not use this switch. You will need to determine how you will bypass the switch. A manual truck has a bypass wire that installs instead of the neutral safety switch.
The only real difference in the pedal assy, is the rod holding the brake pedal. Remove that rod and install the clutch pedal, as it is now the rod that supports the brake pedal. Install the rest of the linkage(knock the plug out of the floor board for the drop rod) and away you go. You'll have to drop the pedal assembly down to get the clutch pedal/rod up in. Not enough room while under the dash. You can get the whole assy, but the clutch pedal is all that is needed to change. Been there, done that on a couple trucks.
As for Neutral safety, remove it from the column, find the 4pin plug and install a jumper across the two pins for the neutral safety switch. The other two pins are for back up lights. Install a switch and plug into these two for that. Really simple fix.
You'll need to slide the crossmember a bit and redrill the frame for the two bolts(no biggie). Then deal with driveshaft(no biggie).
The other issue is speedometer. The cable will need changed out for std shift style transmission(slips in), which most automatics screw on.
