Door ajar light.

My wife's 98 Expedition has what I have been told a bad door sensor in the passenger front door. When the door is shut and vehicle is running, the door ajar light on the dash comes on and the interior light stays on. When the vehicle is off, the running board lights stay on. We have had to pull the fuse so the battery does not drain. Does anyone know where the switch is located and how to remove it or does anyone have any suggestions to fix the current one?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The switch is built into the latch mechanism. Most often you can spray a liberal amount of WD-40 up into the latch mechanism and free up the switch. Open and close the door several times to work it in.

DOOR AJAR LIGHT

THE PROBLEM IS IN THE DOOR JAM BY THE HINGES THAT PLASTIC PIECE IS THE AJAR SENSOR. TO CHANGE IT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE FENDER AND TAKE OUT THE SWITCH TO REPLACE IT, ITS NOT GOING TO BE EASY

I am sure a couple decades ago this may have been the case, but now like Alloro said they are attached to the lock assembly. I have done the WD-40 along with all kinds of other cleaners and lubricants. It did the trick for quite awhile but now it seems to have no affect. Time to look into it a little further. I have read that the switch is pretty cheap. Just do not know where to find or get it.

Finally RH part # XF2Z14018AA $56.78 at local ford stealership
LH part # XF2Z14018AD $48.96

Parts guy said they where only side sensitive. RH would do both right doors etc. And the pricing is per switch so times 2 on each side.

I fixed mine over the weekend. O reily can cross the above #'s to a borg warner numbers and they are a little cheaper with a lifetime warranty. It really was not to hard at all.
I will say that brake clean or solvents probably is not a good idea to spray in the latch assembly. I took the old switch apart and there are two small orings on the pin that travels in a tube. I am thinking that in my case the solvents i sprayed in there made the o rings swell and stick.
On the Nav passanger side the switch is located on the bottom of the lock assembly. The assembly needs to be removed so you can pry the plastic retainer away from the switch tab to get it to quarter turn out.
Feel free to PM me if you have a question.

Yes. I replaced the latch mechanism on my 03 navigator and used the same door sensor, not a problem. I would make are you don't have any looseness in your door latch mechanism. They are sold seperatly on my year model. Mine was a mechanical issue and the sensor was fine. My kids open and close the same door atleast 20+ times a day getting in and out for school and stuff. Make sure it is a snug mechanical latch. Can be changed out in about 30 min taking your time.

It is the assembly that the Nader Bolt snaps into when you close the door. Soak it with WD40 as suggested. You should soak all the latches including the hatch and rear glass.

Nope..... read through this post i fixed mine back in Dec. not a problem since. I listed the part numbers in this post.......
IIRC the switch is at the bottom of the assembly I will try to get a pic up later but the are not very good.

Not really sure what you are saying "nope" to. The assembly that the Nader Bolt snaps into is the latch, which is where the problematic switch is, which is where you spray the WD40.

Right but the switch only attaches to the assembly via 1/4 turn other than that the latch assembly really has nothing to do with it. Her is a pic of the actual switch for the passenger side along with the borg warner box it came in.

The WD-40 trick probably worked a year or two for me then gradually became less and less effective.
The switches are cheap and worth the swap in my opinion. I have not had a problem since x-mas.
Hope it helps.

He asked where it was, that's where it is from the outside. That's where you would spray if you were new to the WD40 trick, which is a few cents worth of time and effort and a great place to start. As you learned you should stay away from solvents and stick with WD40. A picture of the component doesn't help a lot as you can't see it until you take it all apart. Congrats on your two months of trouble free operation.

Wow,
My bad for trying to help, and share what I have found to be helpful. Did not mean to step on your toes. I will try and stay on the 7.3 forum. Good luck.

Found something even better than WD-40, ZEP 45NC. Works for loosening nuts and bolts better than PB Blaster! Just make sure you shake well.
