missing 4.6 with codes

I have a question. I have a 4.6, 98 expedition with 149000 miles that sat for a few months getting started once a month. When I started this time it had a miss so I drove it 80 miles to work thinking it would clear up. Had the codes read and 2 and 4 were missing. It has the 2 big coils at the front of the heads. I thought it was the pass side coil so i changed it. Started it, ran bad and changed those 2 plugs. I had the hood up in the dark, no sparks, the wires and original plugs I changed 40000 miles ago. the number 2 wire had spark. didnt check 4. I started it and it ran a little better, drove it til the light came back on. read the codes and now it showes 4, 7, and 8 are missing. Is this a common problem? If the injectors were bad would it show the code also? Thanks for the replies.

missing Expy

problem seems to be on multiple cylinders. I'd put a bottle of Techron fuel injector cleaner and some good gas in it. Cant hurt. When was the fuel filter last changed ?

I would first remove both coil packs (note or mark wire locations) and clean every single metal contact you find. Reinstall them and see if the misfires are gone.

Has anyone had any luck freeing a valve without tearing a head off? Thanks for the replys. Yesterday before I changed the plugs on 7 and 8 I stuck my compression tester on it and low and behold #8 had no compression. It would barely move the needle the first couple of revolutions then nothing. I put the new plugs on with the new wires and put half a can of seafoam in the gas and the other half in the oil. I also went out to the country and sucked a can of it through the brake vac line... not that I think it will help... I wonder if I can turn the valve with the valve cover off to try and free up the stuck valve... almost positive its the exhaust valve due to the slight sucking of the muffler. Has anyone freed up a valve without tearing the head off?

Oh yeah, drove it maybe 10 miles since the sea foam and the gauge says its hot! I don't think it would be related but I checked the coolant level this morning also. I only drove maybe 20 miles today. I know I have a head gasket leak that I alumasealed three years ago.

You will be less frustrated if you just pull the heads and get a valve job done. There is no quick fix for a stuck or burnt valve. You already know you have a bad head gasket so doing the job right will cure both problems with a big improvement in performance and reliability when you're done.
