i have a 77 f250 highboy 4x4. i have broken the front axel shafts on the driver side and replaced them, 2 times out and i now have broken the side gear in the diff. the truck is old and i dont know how it was treated before i bought it, so im sure this stuff happens. i beleive it is a dana 44 hd with 4:09 gears. my question is can big tires be causing this, how much could i be looking at to replace the ring and pinion and side gears.could the fact that the tires dont really look like they are allinged correctly be helping the problem. i have 36 x 14.5 tires and i have seen people with bigger tires and less problems, was just wondering if that can be causing it. also is replacing the gears pretty simple or should i take it to a shop and have them do it. much thanx to anyone who can help
Well i doubt the tire size alone is to blame. I'm assuming your running a stock open differential? That should be enough protection against the tire size to advert at least some of that breakage...more likely is i'm guessing your finding the wear and tear show thorough. Don't get me wrong...36's on a dana 44 are bound to break parts eventuoly, but unless your running a locker or doing dumb stuff in 4 lo with great traction i can't see you breaking stuff constantly. I'd recomend some aftermarket alloy shafts, moser engineering makes a set for 300 or warn for about 600 ( the warns are a bit stronger due to the way the splines are cut into the shafts) a set of either ctm or for the economical way a set of 760 spicer u joints and a limited slip front differential. This should be able to withstand a bit of thrashing....without breaking stuff constanlty. The other option is to bolt in a dana 60 and be done with it,,,,,breakage a thing of the past.
so if the tire size could be part of the problem what would be a good size tire to go with. i was thinking of going with some 33 x 12.5's bfg's all terrain. i like to climb and when mosoons come i like the mud so i want an all around good tire.
