But you may have a wrong snap ring somewhere else that could "F" things up.

Yes, indeed, there was a wrong snap ring somewhere else. I finally got around to disassembling the front clutch pack and, as the second trans shop predicted, someone had used the direct clutch thin snap ring in the forward clutch pack. So, I now have an extra direct clutch snap ring and the transmission will be assembled correctly. I hate having to fix other people's mistakes.
