My friend has 2012 escape that bangs at different times while in drive and reverse after taken out of park. And of course it will not do it when it is taken to ford. I know when I drive my 2008 and when driving up hill and let off the gas then accelerate it sometimes it will bang.
No this does not happen all the time. This friend had an 07 then got the 2012 and she never said anything about the 07. On my 03 and 08 it happens only when going up hill when I let off the gas then it happens when I give it the gas. It seems the trans does not know what to do. On my friends 2012 it happen on flat surfaces. My 03 and 08 are 4wd.
No trouble codes. Maybe someone out there has some ideas. I know Ford will not do anything until it does it all the time...my friends 2012 started as soon as she got it...and as I said when she takes it does not do it.
Both my Dad and I have 2011 3.0L V6 4x4 Escapes with the same problem. It seem when cold, or if you don't give enough throttle imput, the trans will "bang", or seem to hold a gear too long. I don't like that feeling either, but from what I hear most Escapes with the 6-speed auto do this... at least with the owners I've talked to. Is it a concern? For me, yes, but according to Ford,it's "normal". Gee, I hope so! Good thing it has a 5 year/ 60,000 mile powertrain warranty.
We have the banging in ours occasionally on slow take off, but it comes from the rear diff. Almost like it is taking up slack and kicking in. Dealer has been unable to figure it out, though I can reproduce it by taking off harder and then feathering or letting off the throttle. Almost like the rear responds slower.

Well, it is a electro-mechanical clutch, so it could be sticking. You can double check that is the rearend by pulling the fuse.
My biggest gripe with Ford is that they refuse to step up to the plate and learn how to build a decent FWD trans, or buy one from someone who can. They keep playing around with the 25 year old Escort transmission and trying to make it work on heavier cars and driving their customers off.

This is a newly designed transaxle from Ford/GM and the GM version doesn't have all these problems.
ford knew they had a problem and put out a fix, a big pile of parts and snap rings. yhey even offered a milage based extention on the fix. take your vin to the dealer and have them check it.
our 2013 trans has been solid so far, the car even better in snow then our other escape. we had 12 inches yesterday and proved it self way better, the 100% shift to the rear then slow shift back to the front helps wonders
