Hi, I am new to posting on this forum, but have been active in th 1973-79 truck forum. I just got a 1988 E150 custom van. It has a 302 with around 110,000 miles on it. It has been taken care of really well. My problem is when I start the motor cold. Like the firts start of the day.
If I let it crank 2x and then turn off the ignition and then start like normal it will start and run fine. However, if I just turn the key over and try and start it from a cold start it will crank for a while befor starting. Some times on a cold start it will run for 20 seconds, then die (like running out of gas). When I restart it runs fine for the rest of the day.
I am not too familiar with fuel injection.
Thanks in advance for any trouble shootin tips or suggestions
First I'd pull the codes.

Not sure why it would die after idling, could be IAC or ? Your problem could even be that the injectors are leaking down overnight, if all else fails perform a pressure test after turning it off for the day.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Aug-02 AT 10:54 PM (EST)]First, How cold is cold? My F-150 has issues like yours when I start it cold(-30) during the winter, but it's from the oil being too thick to move and 'cause I forgot to plug it in the night prior.
What type of oil are you using? A heavy oil won't flow well cold. Otherwise
Thanks for the replies. I just got a code reader for my 94 explorer and will check it out. Is there a fuel pressure regulator for the injection system? Also if the injuctors are leaking down would that mean a total replacement or just new o-rings?
When I may cold starting I mean when the engine is ambient temp. In my case (Cary NC) around 75 degrees in the morning. Not like winter cold.
Thanks again for the help. Any more comments would be appreciated.
