Transmission Change

I have a 4WD '88 F-150 with a 302 and a 4 speed manual. I want to exchange the 4 speed for a 5 speed and may switch the 302 for a 351W. I want to restore the truck and make it more interstate friendly. I do not need the low gear and the truck is very slow with terrible gas milage (9-10mpg). I will be pulling a 4000lb. boat and trailer with the truck. Anyway, here are my questions:

1. Will a 351W bolt up to the current mounting brakets?
2. What transmissions and transfer cases will work with the
302 and/or the 351W and what has to be done to make the
change?
3. Do I need to change the rear end gearing? If so, what ratio is
best?

I currently have a rear main seal leak that I am putting off repairing (new clutch while I am there) until I get this figured out. So any advise that can be provided will be appreciated.

Thanks, BlueHose

The ZF Transmission off of a F250 and F350 are 5 speeds with over drive and come in 4x4 models that will mate up to your BW 1356 transfer case (I think that is what you have). The BW 1356 was used on all Broncos,f150,f250, & f350 from 1988 to 1996. You may have to change drive shaft lenghts for the back and front drive shafts. The bell housing comes for the small block 351W and the big block 460, make sure you get the small block bell housing. There are companies on ebay that sell these transmissions with the configuration you need for an okay price like these guys on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6780

They do require a core so if you don't have ZF to exchange you may want to go hunting at a junk yard and take any cross members and any other parts that you need but I think it should be a bolt on installation. You may alos want to look at the transmission discussion group, they will have more info for ya. Good Luck!

Oh I almost forgot that most of the trucks have 3.55 gears so if you have 3.55 gears you will be fine. Only tow packages cam with 3.73 and 4.10. This transmission has very low gears (numerically higher). Gears ratios for 1-5 are: 5.72, 2.94, 1.61, 1, 0.76.
