Front end vibration

Ok back story. Got stuck in my driveway a few days ago due to deep snow. While rocking the truck to get it free it was bouncing a little bit. After I got the truck out I noticed a slight hum at about 30+ mph from the front but only when 4wd engaged. while pulling out a box truck that was stuck in the snow tonight truck was hopping a little. now I have a vibration to go with a slightly louder hum. only makes the noise with 4wd engaged and hubs locked if i go into 2wd and leave the hubs locked everything is normal. have not tried it with 4wd and hubs unlocked. Thinking possible u joint on front drive shaft but cant notice any play when truck is put in fwd then reverse and back again. 07 f250 6.0 140080 miles.

so lets get this straight

Hubs in Lock still in 2wd everything OK

Then Hubs in Lock and switched to 4X4 Noise and Vibration

So when the Hubs are in Lock Everything from the driveline to the Hubs Spins

to check the Ujoint at the steering knuckles you have to turn fulley right and left and Spin note any Play/Drag/Bind

Have not tried this as its -20 today. had truck on the jack yesterday when it started and didnt notice any issues in the front end but i also didt turn the wheels and try turning. This would be alot easier to do if the truck easily fit in the garage.

Might th e tires have become dissimilar size due to wear on the tread, especially agressive treads. Also on a partially hard dry surface. Those cold tires?

Had new tires put on July 1st right before i came up here form Colorado. do not notice any uneven wear on them. Definatly not an aggresive tire. Just a good A/T. And as far as cold it dosnt matter if its the first drive in the mornig or after I have been in the truck for a while.

To test those 2 front Ujoints at steering knuckle truck on ground (No Jack) Hubs UNLOCKED Turned right and Spin Noting How it Moves turn left same thing

you just are making the bearing Fulley Move in the ujoints

oh got ya thought you wanted hubs and all to spin. also few things i forgot to post earlier is it only does it while pressing the gas if im just coasting all is fine. And on a side note is there anything wrong with keeping the hubs locked at all times even if in 2wd.

Ya dont need Hubs Locked to check Front U-Joints at steering knuckle

Spining the Axel when turn right and left Makes the U-Joint bearings go threw a Full Range Motion

Dont think the u joints were the problem. But the ball joint in the cardon joint was toast so possibly that. About to put every thing back on so I will update.

So all is good just finished the test drive no noise or unnatural vibrations. As I said earlier the u-joints seemed fine but the ball joint in the drive shaft at the transfer case end was gone. no one in town listed a part number for a rebuild on this so I got Orielys to let me flip thru the precision u-joint book. The rebuild for the 99-04 is the same part(there are two different ones listed assuming one was for the 7.3 and the other the 6.0) part number for the ball joint is 617 (precision part number) and all three of the u-joints are 232 (this is the HD greasable there are also non greasable but dont have the number for those)/
