The truck comes from the factory with a little credit card in the owners manual with the base code in it.
If you do not have this card, the dealer can hook up his computer and read the code. Some dealers make a big deal over this and want to charge $$$$ (I think that I heard $45). Others have said that it takes like 30 seconds and the dealer will not charge if friendly.
My advice, bring a box of doughnuts when you go to the dealer.
Thanks for the advice. It's sounding like I will be making a trip down to the local dealer. Perhaps if I send the wife with a low cut top I might be able to get a better deal.

Not you I've seen there, but when I saw '03 4x4 with 7.3L I thought most of the '03's were 6.0L's and that the 7.3L was a rarity in them !
See you around the best part of the metroplex!

Bought mine on a large dealer used lot. They took it to one of their smaller shops first to get the code. The salesman and I were informed that they had to hook it up to the computer and download it for the excursion. It would take at least 30-45 minutes to get the download. However, the small shop didn't have the right computer for the job, so we took it across the street to the main service center.
There, they took it in, explained that it had to be hooked to the computer for a download and it would be approx. one hour.
I waited slightly over an hour for them to get it in, work on it, and turn it around. I could see it in the shop, and they did hook up the computer to do the download and it ran best I could tell for over 40 minutes or so.
Based upon this experience, and the first shop telling me that the excursion was different because they could get the code from the explorer with a mirror and flashlight, I can't see how any other method would get this information for this particular model.
Mine is s 2002 model, and maybe some of the earlier years had a different method.
The Service Center did paperwork against the used car lot, I guess to charge the labor to someone.....didn't care as long as it wasn't me.
