cheap 31 spline upgrade?
I'm ASSUMING it's the rear end and not the transfer case... it sounds like it's coming from back there.
anyhow, I got a 3.50 t-lok rear from an '82 Bronco... I promptly tore it apart and found that it's 31 spline and is a big bearing... well, I got a good deal on it, so I figure I didn't LOSE money, but I was hoping to just rebuild the diff and then throw it in my '74 rear...
well, I went and measured, and based on the backing plate flange templates I've seen, I've got big bearing axles...
NOW, I'm thinking I'll just rebuild the 31 spline center section and t-lok unit and just have the '82 axles cut down to size and re-splined... now I just gotta find a place in Dallas that can cut and respline the axles for me... shipping them back and forth across the country seems like it would be counterproductive.
I've found measurements for the stock EB axles, but I'm wondering are those measurements from axle flange to end?
any input will be greatly appreciated. I don't do any crawling or mudding or anything... I would be fine w/ 28 spline stock spec stuff, but if I could upgrade to 31 spline this way, it would be a cheap upgrade for me that I might as well do... freshly splined/slightly stronger axles, etc. I got the '82 rear end for $80 pulled and loaded in my car, so I'm slightly ahead of the game on it at this point.
thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Forrest
