First off, I have a 94 4x4 ranger xlt ext. cab with a 4.0 engine in her. When I lock my hubs in four wheel drive and then turn hard the wheels will jerk real bad. This is due to the joints in the front axle correct ? Now, is there anything I can do to make this better ? When I back up and turn even just a little bit in four wheel drive it jerks.
Also, is it possible to turn the 4x4 on and put it in low without having the hubs locked in place ? Will it hurt anything ? Once in awhile I just want that low gear range but the front axle jerking irritates me. Is it bad to put the truck in 4x4 without having the hubs locked in place ?
2Lo won't hurt anything. I do it all the time, especially when towing.
There's not much you can do about the jerking when turning in 4WD, but the change when backing sounds unusual. Check all the bushings in your front suspension and the whole steering system.
BTW You shouldn't be using 4WD on surfaces so hard that the jerking interferes with steering.
