I've seen the use of a Capless fuel fill system in the racing world, but would someone please explain the logic of using one on my F-150?

The only thing I can think of is to keep from losing the cap. I know, a tether would do the same. I've had this 150 since August, and I still want to screw a cap on.
My 04 had the tether on it... love to hang down and try to scratch my black shiny paint. So i cut it off. Yup, a little while later dropped the cap and it split in half. Love my capless fuel system on my new 12
I think it is great feature, my Explorer has it and wish my F250 did. It hangs down just far enough to touch the paint and possible scratch it. It does take a little to get used to not having one though. Plus they save money by not using one.
ford sells a locking gas cap if you really want a cap.
i hate a teathered cap, but i hate an unteathered one worse.
the only thing that bothers me is if the filler gets really dirty, i see the potential to wash that dirt down the filler neck into the non-servicable fuel filter.

I have the same concern with dirt, but I think I will eventually get used to not having a cap. It's only been 6 weeks.
I've had my truck for 3 years this coming January and i have never wiped or cleaned anything out of the fuel door area, with the exception of hosing it out the first time i washed my truck. I was used to having a cap and a door that didn't seal, and having to rinse the soap out. OOPS.
There is a very faint sign of dust, but that is it. I would say that ford did a pretty good job on the fuel door seal.
Always thought it was just a gimmick, did they continue them through to the current F150's? Only issue I have with mine is it spills fuel from underneath if I put one more drop in after the first click.
I guess I am the minority here. I like it as it's one last thing to deal with. Just open the door and fill up. I would think it would have to seal pretty good. Look what happens if you leave the gas cap loose on most vehicles these days. I have heard some people say they are afraid of people putting something in the gas tank. It's not as easy as it looks to do that with this set up and don't kid yourself, if someone is going to put something in your gas tank, a gas cap isn't going to prevent that from occurring.
They did it for some reasons in the emissions side of it too. But mostly I think they did it for some of the brain dead people of the world.
Likely the two biggest reasons Ford did this, then tried to pass it off as a convenience item. Thinking about it, it sorta reminds of the daytime running light thing on gubbermint motors crap.
