adding front gas tank
I just picked up a bed from my 79 f100. Unlike the original one this has 2 fuel filler doors. I looked underneath and located a wire where the tank would sit. There is no braketing etc in place and the only wreaking yard I got to today didnt have any front mounted tanks. There is another identical wire at the rear tank, attached to nothing (both have grey electrical connections). Are these for the duel tank set up and what all do I need to create a functioning system. If anyone is using an other than stock system I would concider anything that works.

On a 79 there was a switch in the cab for the dual tanks and there were some dealer mounted manual switches under the seat. You can find the switch at a bigger parts house or maybe at http://www.car-part.com they have a pretty good selection.

I'm guessing the tank you have now is the aft (rear) tank. To run dual tanks all you need is the valve ( I forget the technical name) that hooks your tank lines to the fuel pump inlet line and a mid-ship tank. The older trucks (73/4...) had the valve mounted between the seat (on the drivers side) and the door. When you started to run out of gas you just reach down between the seat and the door and turn the valve. Then you just flip the switch on the dash by the heater controls to read the other tank. On the newer trucks, the switch changes both the tank and the gauge. You should be able to use the doner parts from any 73 through 80's truck to make it work. I don't know what year the went from manual to electric. Before you get too far make sure you can mount a mid-ship (front) tank on your truck and make sure it is the right one for the truck (or will fit well). It is not a universal setup as far as the mid-ship tank goes. Good luck.
