I have a 94 F250 HD 460/E4OD. I am having a random problem with the transmission. Once or twice a day it will suddenly slip and then abruptly slam back in to gear. It is usually happening when I am cruising. The RPMs suddenly start to rise and then it catches. Never happens when accelerating or going up a hill. Any ideas? What should I check?
First thing I would do before anything is check your tranny fluid, see if your low or if it's dirty. And then change the fluid/filter for good measure unless you've done it fairly recently.
O did ck the fluid a couple weeks ago and was about a quart low. I have added to the full mark. It didn't seem to change any. I bought the truck from a dealer two months ago and it had apparently just been serviced as the fluid is very clear and new looking. The truck only has 69000 miles so it shouldn't be wearing out yet. The only way I can simulate the problem is to slip the gear lever in to neutral while driving and then slip back into drive. It acts and feels exactly the same. Could this be a problem with the electronic controls?
My truck did the same thing. I'd be driving down the freeway doing around 70 and the tranny would shift to neutral then slam back in. It turned out to be the sensor on the side of the tranny. I can't remember what they called it, something like neutral safety switch or something like that. I do know it only cost like $45.00
Have the exact same problem with my 94 F-250 with 460/E4OD. I found the answer in the manual gear positon sensor. That's the sensor on the transmission where the shift lever attaches. I swapped the part with the wifes 94 Bronco. Now the Bronco does it and the F-250 doesn't. I'll be making the trip to the dealer tomorrow.
If you want to test yours with an ohm meter, email me direct and I'll tell you how.

Thanks guys. I'll ck into that part. If it is only $45 I have no problem replacing it. I was just afraid it might be an actual tranny problem. Hope this does it!
My Mark VIII did what you are describing. I bought a "MANUAL LEVER POSITION SENSOR" through one of the internet Ford parts supply companies for about $65. Put it on myself. Fixed the problem.
Well, I got the part from Ford and replaced it. Not bad except for having to change to a new wiring harness. We'll see if it fixes the problem. Thanks for your help.
