Exclamation OT: Texting + Driving = BOOM!

Yesterday morning was really interesting.......

Young kid said he was sending a text message and dropped his phone. He reached down to get it and managed to take out our mailbox and crash into the neighbor's tree. He tried to flee, but the truck stalled out on him. Luckily he was not hurt, and no kids were playing in the street. We asked how fast he was going, and he said 20 mph........ you be the judge.

Sorry to hear.

Parents should check into this: AT&T has an ap now that sends an automatic respones (" so and so is driving ") to anyone texting your device if your phone is moving over 25 mph.

O.K. looks like at least 35 mph to me, but that is not why I am posting.

My guess is that we all want to know what video camera set up you have, whether or not you like it, and whether or not you can view it online.

Thanks for posting... I'll have to look at the video when I get home due to company internet filters.

It only takes half a second to miss something critical, and texting consumes WAY more than half a second... even just LOOKING at incoming messages or calls takes longer than that, too!!

I'm glad to hear no one got hurt. Maybe the kid will learn something.

I would say closer to 40 mph. I was gonna make a joke about Dodge and the fact that it couldnt take a hit from a mailbox and keep going, but then I determined that was a pretty nice mailbox, more like a brick chimney.

State trooper and I agreed it was closer to 50. You can see how the truck skids across the neighbor's driveway before slamming into the tree. The marks were pretty bad. An he left two big holes in the grass where he threw it in reverse to get out.

The camera setup is self installed. Really like it, and am constantly upgrading/changing things to test them out. Yes, of course you can view online and on phones/tablets.

Yes, for sure. Our oldest is 9, but we lecture her quite often about things like this.

Hope so. He really did not seem to care. Kept saying it was "no big deal". We'll see how he feels after seeing the judge next week.

Really glad this happened in the morning, because the street is usually littered with kids in the afternoons. We have been wanting speed bumps for a long time since people fly up and down the street, but not enough people agree.

I just did a search, and there are more than several options for this kind of app now.

Great links! I'll have to give some of those a try and see how they work. I've been buying my kids manual transmission vehicles....that usually keeps them from attempting to text while driving.

Not to mention the civil ramifications.

I'd bet that you could file a pretty-substantial claim against his insurance company for a contractor for that mailbox rebuild, professional gardening costs to the lawn, certified arborist to look at the tree damage, etc.

You and your neighbor can each get kinda' "creative" when it comes to making yourselves "whole" again, and I wouldn't let his parents "buy his way out of this", either.

Jus' sayin'..........

And, the DA needs a copy of your video. Can someone stand up at his arraignment and testify that he attempted to flee the scene? That's a separate charge that your DA needs to include, and if the property damage is above a certain limit, that could be a felony. Maybe he's now a "flight risk" and will need to be incarcerated until his trial..........

Actions have consequences.

Marv,

The kids' mom was a little crazy. She was one of those "my son can do no wrong" moms. When I called the cops, she told me I would get nothing because I called them, lol.

The dad was cool. They barely moved into the neighborhood a couple months back. he did not like that we met under these circumstance. We have a copy of the ticket and spoke with him about it. He agreed to have it fixed, and they are doing so at this very moment.

The truck easily has 3-4k in damage.... it will probably take 3-400 to fix the mailbox. I am easy to get along with, and thankful the kid was not hurt. I could really see the look of disappointment in his father's eyes.

The kid was cited for reckless driving, unsafe speed, and leaving the scene of an accident.

I edited my text above to add some thoughts.

Who's going to fill the tracks in the lawn and take care of the tree? "

Looks like the Mom needs a lesson in neighborliness.

Really do not think the neighbor is too worried about the tree. They are going to fix the wood frame around it, though. He had a 4x4 box built around it out of that old style square telephone pole. The impact dislodged it completely and busted two of them in half. It was a hard hit! Lucky, though, because had the tree not stopped him, he would have ended up in the next neighbor's living-room.

It was funny when his dad got there. He told his wife to be quiet and sent her to stand next to her son while he dealt with me, the neighbor, and the trooper. That made her REAL happy......
