The last couple starts have been odd, truck starts good, strong, then after some time the motor goes totally silent for about 5-20 seconds, then returns to it normal sound. The exhaust doesn't change, the rpm stays the same, it just gets quiet?? It runs fine once warm, seems to have normal power and no change in fuel consumption. It's a 2006 f350 in stock form with 90 000 miles on it. Would really appreciate any advice.... Thanks Jason
I had a handheld OBDII scanner that had an emission rediness test built in. It would take maybe 15sec to run the full test and would display green/yellow/red light as a result. From maybe the 7sec to 11sec part of the test a 6.0 would go eerily quiet. No diesel rattle, rpm's picked up just a bit but smooth and quiet. At the time, I posted here about it and I believe it was pulling the EGR valve open during the quiet part of the test.
Do you have a monitor to watch EGR actual and commanded? I'm not sure why your truck would be doing this unless your batteries have been disconnected recently and it's trying to reestablish a baseline. You may find a pending EGR related code if you scan it with a good quality scanner, or it may just quit doing this after your next long drive or two.
No gauges, I'm getting one soon, did disconnect the battery a month ago and my altinator is going, battery light is coming on at times but only after slowing down from a highway run.
