Much Needed Transmission Help

Ok to start out i have a 96 ford bronco full size 5.0 5speed 4x4 the trans went out last night lost 1st & 2nd gear it was grinding in 2nd when down shifting and first started grinding and would stay in ( started acting up abt a week ago)
Anyways i found a 5speed in a 91 f-150 6cyl 4x4 will that bolt up to my engine and that? Also i thought i herd that the 91 has a cable drivin speedometer as the 96's had a sensor one? can i just switch mine out with it or? Thanks

You lost 1 and 2... Manual transmissions are stupid simple. If you are willing to go to the point of pulling out the old one and putting in a new one, why not open the old one up and inspect it. Sounds like the 1/2 sychronizer could be worn out. The teeth on those wear down over time and get to the point where they dont engage. Yes, its possible there could be bad gears but you dont know unless you check. Easy to do though.

I pulled the top off today and where the gears them self are all look good no missing teeth and doesnt look wore out.
Now on the top piece where the shift forks are the forks them selfs one has a heat spot on it the other looks badly wore,
Could this cause my shifting to be messed up?




PS this morning i had 1st & 2nd gear back i think some small pieces that wore off the shift fork got into the gears/shifting and made them stuck

The synchronizers are usually the ones to wear out. The dog teeth on that sort of round out causing it not to mesh with the teeth on the gear and thus popping out of gear.

Shift forks, although not so much as common but still happens, are the other weak link. They are aluminum so they are weak.

Maybe you can find a new top cover (or even just shift forks) and just replace em. Itll probably fix your problem. Then flush out the transmission to see if and get rid of anything that might be in there.

yea its the shift forks by the looks of it i found a site on here by the name of
Thegearbox.org i can get both forks + shipping for $82.40 as compared to the dealer i called and was over $200. But for now im going to try a used top end from a 91 f150 and see how those are.

Is there any way of testing the bearings? like lightly prying on the gears for movment or? Also Is there a better fluid to add to them insted of the regular Mercon?

Mercon is the fluid... I am an OEM guy so maybe if someone else reads this thread they will have ideas of something else....

As for bearings... just checking movement and rotation is all I can think of. Im not really sure... I dont know any specs on them or movement or anything..

ok and yeah im prob gunna got with that again i just know i seen on some other forums guys running synthetic and that.

Back to your original question- the 5 speed trans from the F150 will bolt right in. There's a good chance that if the trans is original in the F150, it's a ZF-5 trans. It will bolt right in, just re-use your current t-case so that you won't have any issues with drive shafts possibly not bolting right up.

I dont believe in synthetic. It is overpriced and overhyped. Some guys will argue against that...

I have seen Amsoil engine oil put into a heavy dumptruck and run over a million miles. The oil was changed only a handful of times. The parts looked brand new when it was disassembled. The claim is that you send oil samples to amsoil every xxxx miles, and only change oil when they recommend to you to do so.

It was done, but many people will argue against that too. But it all comes down to preference. Im just old fashioned...

I thought the zF-5 only came in f250 & up Trucks?

Do these look like the right shift forks???? Site i found sells them for $33 each plus the Cost of shipping comes to $82.50 sure beats other places i looked.

They are in MEEEECHIGAN... Never heard of em.....

Anyhow, They look ok. The only sure thing to do would be to order them and do a side by side comparison to make 100% sure. But, you should do that with any part.

IM emailing them know asking if they will fit, Does anyone know what the yellow plastic thing in the trans on the drivers side front does? Just curious

I used to think that as well until I started looking under the F150's w/ the 4.9's. I've literally looked at 50 of them in the scrap yards over the past few years, every one of them had the ZF-5 in them.
