Specifically, what to look for. I want the 5.4, the big tranny and brakes, etc. Can you get these in the XLT or just EB? Anybody know the codes to look for for these? How do these things do offroad? For reference, I am coming from a stock 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (old style). Also, is it safe to buy a high mileage (80k or more) one? Thanks a bunch!

You can get these options on an XLT - I own an XLT with leather, 3rd row, 4R100 transmission, and 4 corner Load leveling suspension. As far as offroad performance, it depends on what you're looking for. Obviously, Ford didn't intend for people to take a $40,000 truck off road (that's what Land Rovers are for ) but I feel that the Expy can hold its own - it's essentially an F150 with more seating, so it should be able to do fairly well. As far as the higher mileage goes, I wouldn't sweat it. I've already decided that I'm going to run my Expy until it explodes. I've got 69K on there right now and I haven't had so much as a hiccup, with the exception of a few nit-picky things. When you buy your X, make sure you get the service records with it. There were a number of 5.4s that came from the Windsor plant that had head gasket leak problems (rear passenger, to be specific). Some of them weren't really ever fixed right.
My X doesn't leak (1999), but my brother's (also a 99) leaks a bit from the head gasket problem.
