I changed thermostat about 3 months. Flushed the system and core. The truck gets warm and the heater works awesome. Then the temp drops under acceleration. Then will get warm again go to about half way and the temp gauge will almost bottom out again. The heat from heater follows the temp gauge. I've searched and searched. I put a scan tool on watched the temp raise and fall. Any suggestions cause I am worn out. Checked the levels took the cap off while running its circulating goes down when the RPMs goes up. I even through frustration stuck my finger in the radiator after the truck had been idling and running for over an hour. And the fluid was cool. My only thought at this point which I can hear the click when it opens. Is that the thermostat is staying open to long or not shutting. Any thoughts
I agree, sounds like the replacement thermostat is acting out, or some crud has broken loose & is caught in it & holding it open, or you have the wrong heat range thermostat. We're to use a 195 deg thermostat, preferably one with the air bypass design, that aids in burping air from the system.
Might have some air trapped in system. Park on an incline and with engine cold remove rad cap, start it up ,turn heater to highest setting and let engine run till totally warmed up. That should burp any air. Top off radiator if level drops when you are done..
The intermittent heat symptoms described make me think there is air in the heater core. Both heater hoses should be hot when the engine is running.
I have had to remove one of the heater hoses to get the air out of my cooling system whenever I have flushed and changed the coolant. I added a flushing 'tee', and I think that allowed me to burp the system successfully. I think I moved the hoses to allow the trapped air to come to the highest point, where I could let it out of the tee by loosening the cap. May have to do that a few times.
