I have a 97 F250 7.3L with a little over 300,000 miles on it. It starts up fine and idles fine. The problem is while going down the road it will cut out and on occasion die and start right back up but still runs hard. When it starts acting up it will blow out a lot of white exhaust. It seems to do it worse when it is cooler out. We have put in a new fuel filter and tried different fuel sources but doesn't make a difference. Before last winter we had to unplug the heater element in the fuel filter, it went bad and was blowing the fuse. We haven't replaced it due to the truck doing fine last winter but don't know if it has something to do with what it's doing now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jenelle & Frank
I don't think it's your fuel filter heater. Most guys don't run theirs. How warm is the engine when it blows white smoke? How much work have you done on the truck in terms of maintenance? Injectors, Injector orings, fuel filter, oil change etc. What kind of CPS (camshaft positioning sensor) is in the truck?
We not even a month ago changed the fuel and air filters and changed the oil. I will have to look tomorrow to see about the CPS. It blows more when it's cold even though we have been plugging it in every night. It doesn't cut out and die as much if we can manage to drive it around a little while.
