When started, my 95 Explorer's idle is all over the place. It will go up to around 1200 rpm, drop until it nearly dies, and shoot back up again. If I shift into drive the idle will even out to around 500 rpm, and idle smooth. I tried cleaning the IAC valve. Any suggestions?
Steve, first try cleaning the throttle body. Use a shop rag and WD-40; don't use a solvent (it will remove the special coating). Clean it around the area where the throttle plate meets the housing.
If this dosen't work, then I would suspect the neutral start switch being bad. Does it start and idle the same in neutral, as in park?
Even though you cleaned the IAC, it might also be bad.
It does start and idle the same in park or neutral. Once in gear, the idle evens out considerably. While driving, if I let off the gas, I can see the RPMs return to idle, and begin to fluctuate, but not as bad as in neutral or park. It may be just coincidence, but it seem to idle fine when started this morning and the engine was cold.
