i have a 98 explorer 4wd 4.0l v6 efi. the problem seems to be with cylinder 3 it burns and breaks the plug. this causes a very rough engine and eventuly the check engine light comes on. i was wondering if anyone has had this trouble and what fix is there for this problem? It is becoming very annoying as this is the 5th plug in less than a year. a quick check of the vehicle history shows that this has been an ongoing problem. i guess i got stuck.
yes i am using platium (nkg) plugs. part of thr porcilean(sp) around the tip is breaking. this cause the rough running engine. i figure that cylinder is running rich and hot.

With the spark polarity of Ford's EDIS, the ONLY plug that will
give you longevity is a double platinum plug. The only
manufacturers of double platinum plugs are Motorcraft, and
Autolite. With ALL other manufacturers (NGK, Bosch, etc.) just
the center electrode is platinum.......
In your case, You may have a vacuum leak on the single cylinder
you are having trouble with. A "LEAN" mixture will be HOTTER
than a "RICH" mixture....Make sure the lower intake bolts are
tight. A very dirty injector on the cylinder will make a "LEAN"
mixture also...
I know the manual calls for platinum, but other than the longevity issue, does it hurt at all to use regular? I replaced the plats (looked like someone had tried to get the whole 100k out of em too) that were in my 96 4.0 Explorer when I got it with standard autolite b/c the replacement guide said it was fine, and I never noticed a diff between plats and std on my 3.8 Taurus. At any rate, longevity isn't an issue for me b/c I replace every year.
