suspected bad ecm

suspected bad ecm

Does anyone know about ecm interchange on the 7.3? I suspect I have a bad one, cold starts and runs all day but if I shut it off and try to restart it I get no ecm , no fuel pump, no wts light. After about 5 minutes to half hour it usually starts back up like nothing happened. I swapped relays back and forth and no go.so it kinda makes me think a.resistor in the pcmcia.is bad or something. The truck is a 2000 lariat crewcabs dually automatic with 330 on the odometer. I hawve two parts rigs, both 2000 7.3 xl crewcabs srw with automatics, anyone know if the ecms swap? Greatly appreciated. Steve

This place I found to be excellent in the computer info and help. autocomputerexchange.com (888-672-4816)

I ended up not using the pcm from them and returned it. They also provided good help when I talked to their techs.

Have you checked the ignition circuit? Coud be the signal isn't getting to the PCM.

I changed the keyswitch and ignition switch, but other than that no. But why will it cold start EVERY time justhave no power only upon restart? Thanks for your input, keep it coming! Steve

Also... I failed to mention I've had this truck in three different diesel shops and had to yank it away each time, it would sit there for months and collectively I've for about 5000 just for diagnostics and yet here I sit with a broken truck. No one seems to be able to figure it out. thanks guys

I'm not sure about compatibility but you need to pull all the computers and mark them so you don't mix them up. There is a tag and it will have a PCM code. It would be nvk4 or nvk5 or pmt1 etc. get the numbers or take a pic of the tags and post them so you can get more exact answers.

Awesome, thanks Turbo......I know I should probably by a new one and have it flashed, but I hate to do that if one of my other two will work, and I don't know for sure its the problem. I'll try and do what you suggested when I get off work tonite. Thanks, ill keep you posted.

Since your parts trucks are the same year, 7.3s and autos, you should be able to swap their PCMs to at least trouble shoot.

The differences in PCMs are for the most part latest programming, auto or manual, 49 state or California (emissions) and cold or warm weather.

Here is the most complete list of PCMs by year that I have for 1999 to 2002.

I can't figure out how to do pics on here from my phone....but the replacement ecm is a xc3f-bf and the one in my truck is a Xu7f-ab......I'm trying them now. Thanks guys

What are the big letters on the PCM? The same spot mine says nvk3.

According to the tag mnm1.... It says its a reman, although I can plainly see where my old bully dog chip was plugged into the back of it, the terminals are all scarred up. The shop had told me they had put a reman in it, maybe they did.but its my same one they must have sent in. The replacement I have says nvk4

Well..... Got in the ecm........started right up!!!!! Started it about 15 times in a row!!!!!!!!!! Haven't been able to do that in years. THANKS!! maybe with your help we can squeeze another 330k out of her! Years of problems solved in a day. Fn shops. If you want to do it right you got to do it yourselves (with the help of some friends, of course). Thanks guys!
