A neighbor just put a 02 Navigator out in the yard with a for sale sign. It has no plates on it and not certain if it was his vehicle. Just called for info on it all his wife could tell me is he wants $5k and it has a v8. She thinks it has 4wd...
Planning on looking at it when he is around.
Questions are...
-How can you tell its 4wd there were no markings on the outside.
-Does $5k sound like a good place to start negotiations toward best offer.
-Are there any problem areas to look for on this model year.
-Any other suggestions would be much obliged.
you never mentioned the mileage that will change the price. Easy to tell if its a 4x4 there will be a switch on the dash to the right of the steering wheel to change it to 4 hi and 4 low you can also just look under the truck for a front diff...
i just bought my 2000 and im having issues with the 4x4 binding up and people are telling me its the tires, im still not buying it as tires always wear uneven im still going with the sensors being bad the system should adjust for the extremely small tire size difference. i also have a bad clockspring so my airbag light is on, the screen on my radio stopped working so i need a new one. look at the air suspension mine goes flat after a few days i have a small leak somewhere. i think the air suspensions are the biggest thing to check out.
for 5k that baby better be pretty sweet. (seems high to me) I recommend checking the STREET value of that truck on other sites. I would inspect the air bags for air ride. Make sure all electronics are working. lots of bells an whistles in that thing.
The EPA mileage rating now (it was recently been adjusted by the EPA) is about 13 mpg average. Better than that is a bonus.
When you drive it you should be certain the transfercase engages in every range. To engage 4X4 Lo you must put the trans in neutral and with your foot on the brake turn the selector to low range. Be certain to drive for a couple of blocks in low range and make a few left and right turns in a parking lot to verify there is no binding in the drive train. The suspension air compressor should come on when you put it in lo-range and the truck should raise up about 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches. This is a feature built into the trucks with 4X4 and air suspension. If there is noise or binding while driving or turning don't buy it!
Don't make an instant decision after the test drive but, look at the truck's stance the next morning. If it is sitting low there could be suspension problems.
Look for rust on the metal under the dash as some Navigators had water leak problems at the corners of the windshield.
Make sure the heat and air adjustments work flawlessly. A broken blend door can cost $500 to $1500 to fix depending on the shop.
For $5,000.00 that Navigator should be low mileage and nearly new in appearance inside and out with all of the service records as well as having near new tires.
If you research Craigs List and eBay and Auto trader Online you will find a lot of these for less than that price.
Good luck with your search.
Is your wife saying 3K is too much or too little to offer? With 150,000 miles the truck should still have plenty of life left in it. You don't know the truck and probably not the owner very well so I suggest you check out other sources as I believe there are plenty of them out there for a lot le$$. As with all used vehicles, buying one is a crap shoot and the buyer has to bet wisely.
Thanks again folks. The wife is anti since I already have a H3 Hummer and fails to understand I need more payload area. A valid point is where to put it in the driveway...
