I had to drop the tank on my topaz (super small!) But I still siphoned all of the fuel out into Gerry cans just to make it easier. I couldn't imagine trying this with any amount of fuel, considering a quarter tank is the same as a full tank on my topaz!

Guess it is not the same tank as the F450/550 like I had thought before.... that tank is steel and has a plug at the bottom in the middle.

I forgot to add one more thing that worked great for me:
When it was time to thread the ring back on to the tank, I put the ring in the oven on warm (which on my oven is 170 degrees F, well below the melting point of the plastic ring). I turned the oven on and put the ring in. When the oven buzzed to notify it was pre-heated (less than 5 minutes), I took the ring out and got it threaded on to the tank by hand all the way tight. Then snugged it up with a couple hits with my block of wood and hammer.

Considering it took 10 minutes of beating to get the ring off, I thought it was a pretty good time saver.
