Wheel well / Supercab rust
I've seen many Fords from the early to mid 90's with the exact same rust pattern....right over the wheel wells and in the rockers of the Supercab.
So my question is how much should it cost to have a shop cut out the bad areas, weld in new metal, and paint it? Also, is this idea even worth it since rust will most likely develop somewhere else?
Interior and everything else looks fine, it's just these four nasty rust spots.
Thanks,
KJ
When you repair using a patch, you will get minor warping on the box, and you will have to spend hours using a block sander to get it straight again.
So, I decided to take it to an auto body shop and showed them the problem areas, and showed them the panels. They told me that it would be about $650.00 CDN to replace the panels, not including the body work to get it straight again.
I decided to think about it for a few days and look at the option of replacing my box all together. After about 15 phone calls I found a number of good boxes for sale. They all ranged between $500.00 and $1200.00 CDN (Canadian $). I took a look at a few of them and decided to get one that cost me $600.00.
I am now in the process of using POR15 on the underside of the box to prevent future rust problems and am going to replace it next weekend.
While I have the box off, I am going to POR15 the Frame, and gas tank as well.
So, I figure for a bit of extra $ I will have a near new condition box, that is protected from rust for years to come, and the frame is going to look good as well.
If you go this route, look in the papers, call the wrekers, and call the tow yards.
Towing companies purchase new trucks and take the boxes off. That is where I got mine from. It was just some guy who had 3 tow trucks and had a few boxes laying around.
Good Luck.
