Does anyone know what this is?

My truck overheated tonight and when I got home and popped the hood I noticed this was broken. It has two cooling hoses going to the heater core on one side and two hoses on the other side, one going to the water pump and the other to the thermostat housing. Is there a way to bypass this?

I was able to talk to the dealer yesterday and found out it is the heater control valve. They had one in stock so I got it. Still not sure what caused it to break though.
