ok guys, i bought my 98 f150 xlt 4.6 extended cab in december, i put on my lift, gettin ready to add tires and wheels, now i am wondering what can i do to my engine, any suggestions? should i go with exhaust first, or something else, i have a friend that will put a raven dual exhaust, with chrome pipes, dumped in the middle for 100 bucks. pretty god deal, so i am gonna do that, but what else can i do to my engine to make it perform better? chips? etc....
thanks
Some say that chips work, I didn't see any gains in my Mustang when I installed a Hypertech chip. Took it out at the track and ran the same times. I just added a Flowmaster and twin tailpipes to mine yesterday. The throttle responce improved aa well as the pulling torque. I also have a K&N air filter.
Chips may have better effect these days on OBDII cars than they did on older ones, but I wasn't impressed at all then.
What are you talking about dumping it in the middle? Turn downs? You will need a big amp to hear the stereo due to the droning rumble if you do not use tail pipes.

I agree with ixman1, I also tried a hypertech chip and I didn't see any noticeable gains in power. In fact after a short time using it my engine started missing, so I took it off. Plus, it only works if you use 92 octane or higher gas, which is as you know more expensive. Some headers are a good idea but be prepared to spend some serious dough, plus the labor to install them. I put JBAs on mine and a high flow muffler with two outlets exiting just in front of the right tire, it runs well and sounds nice, even at idle is has a mellow burble. I also tried a K&N FIPK kit and again, a waste of money, no noticeable improvement in mileage or power. As it is now, I have no problem spinning the tires on takeoff.
I have a 99 f150 supercab with a 5.4l v8 and have done quite a number of mods to my truck. Unlike the other guys I say chips work but I'v never been a big fan of hypertech. I had put a super chip micro tuner in my truck and did notice a difference in power plus 2mpg increase in gas but I had to take that chip out because of the other mods I did which require special programming (gibson headers, BBK 75mm throttle bodie, and a mass airflow sensor) I have also put an airaid intake and that helped out but if your going to go with an intake I recommend a volant intake because its a true cold air intake system, I'm planning on switching to one of those eventually. I also have 3" dual exhaust with a magnaflow dual in dual out muffler and had the cat converters removed. I have a ton of power but its still not enough, I'm planning on getting a specially programmed diablo chip and a performance ignition system. I am going to get my truck dyno tested after those. I figure I'm pretty close to 400 horses right now.
