97 Explorer Computer Diagnostic Q

The check engine light has come on in our 97 Explorer. I am wondering if I can check the codes like I did in my 87 F-150 by using an OHM meter and shorting out 2 pins and counting the numbers or if I need to have a OBD II code reader. I'd rather buy the reader than pay $45 every time to have the dealer check it.

Thanks much

Travis

Dont think you can jump the pins. Best way to find out is to goto your local autozone and they will check it for you for free.
I own a actron obdII code reader and paid about a 100 bucks for it from e-bay. Hope this helps!

97 Explorer Computer Diagnostic Q

I discovered last night while looking under my hood that the computer in my 97 Explorer is an EEC or at least that is what was printed on top of the box on the firewall. Is that correct? Plus there is a 18 pin connector under the dash. I thought the OBD was 16 pins. How can I tell for certain what type of computer My vechile has?

Thanks

Travis

OBD II was required for all US vehicles in 1996. (At least that's my understanding). I'm sure that a 97 model would have an OBD II....
