I have a 15 year old who has (wisely) decided that his first vehicle should be a Bronco - just like dear old dad's - only newer. I have read posts here that suggest certain types (years-?) of EFI are more easily modified than others.
Would anyone be willing to refresh my memory as to what year(s) - '90 to '96 - are "better" and which (years &) type of EFI (if any) I might want to avoid? Being a carburetor "fossil", I don't want to make this any harder on myself than I have to. Of course, the engine will be a 4.9, and I'll be leaning on you guys if and when any "newfangled" (EFI) problems crop up.
Personally, I'd narrow the range to '94-'96, if there aren't any "special problems" with those years! I always include research with the Consumer Reports when car shopping - to pinpoint problem years and areas, but they don't have a category for "ease of modification/maintenance".
I don't know any specifics on the Bronco, but as far as EFI goes, my impression is that there are only two types: MAF and Speed Density. MAF was only on the latest engines built 95/96 I think. As far as problems, I don't know of any really. Mine is at 210,000 and never had a problem. I changed the fuel filter for the FIRST time at 195,000, and run cheap gas. I don't know what they will take as far as mods(but plan to find out firsthand soon!).
Long story short, it's still a 300, so you can't kill it, and the EFI in my opinion just made them that much more reliable!
Right. No 4.9L in '92-96 Broncos. MAF was offered on CA V-8 trucks in '94-95, and was standard on 4.9Ls, 5.0Ls, & 5.8Ls in '96, but they went OBD-II that year also.
For several reasons, I'd stick to '93-96: 4WABS, electronic cruise servo, ignition module, fuel pump, body style, & interior are superior (IMO) in that range.
If you just have to have a 4.9L MAF, swap it into whatever year you like.
