I have a 1995 Ranger Splash,2WD, 3.0L. Occasionally, while driving at night, I've experienced problems with my headlights going out momentarily and then coming back on. My instrument cluster lights stay on. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get help with this problem? Thanks!
Check the connections at the headlight lamp. I have seen these get real grimy and sometimes the wires get knocked loose while addressing other issues with the truck. Also be sure that your connections for the headlight relay are clean. It may very well be the relay has become weak and trips.
Do the taillights go off also or just the headlights? If it is headlights and taillights it likely is the headlight switch. Yours would not be the first one with this illness.
I appreciate the help with this problem. I don't know if the taillights go out at the same time, because I can't see them while I'm driving. Could anyone tell me where the headlamp relay is? I bought my truck used and it didn't come with an owner's manual. Thanks again!
I had to replace the head light switch in my 94, If you do this buy a good one not a checkers switch. I have done mine twice the checker switch burned out in a month.
Reasonably certain that the relay is in the fuse panel under the dashboard to the left of the steering column. If not on your model, it should be in the electrical control panel under the hood. It is next to the battery in my Ranger.
An owners manual should be available from Helm - helminc.com. Chilton and Haynes manuals are helpful to a point. Most other test procedures are available through threads on this forum.
i actuaslly had the bad problem mine did that also but one day i was driving with the lights on and i saw smoke coming out of my steering wheel, the next thing i new i didnt have any lights still had instument lights and side lamps but now i have to pay 85 bucks plus labor, and u know haw much labor can run up on a simple project to get it fixed, for the mean time im running around w/ my high beams which isnt safe for long periods either but hey it beats someone running into u so if i were u id go have it checked out
I appreciate all the feedback I've received. I finally had the headlamp switch replaced. I was lucky enough to find a reasonable and honest mechanic to do it for $50.00. So far, I haven't had any problems, but I still need to have the door jamb/chime problem fixed. At least I got the safety issue fixed. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!
lol no really I had the same problem but with my signal lights. I bumped the turn signal switch while talking to a friend and you know fidgeting around and I guess it did something I had no turn signals.... I went out next morning and checked the fuses and all to check make sure I knew what was wrong I turned on the turn signals and hazards and they worked fine even though night before they hadn't work at all no problems lately that was back in about march or so.
If it's not one thing it's another.....Now my cruise control display that lights up when the lights are on,on the right side of my steering wheel went out. I haven't looked yet, but I'm hoping it's just a fuse. I LOVE my truck, but these little problems sure are trying my patience.
