No "MAX" cool
I know I might get thrown off the boards for this question but here goes: 1997 THUNDERBIRD (FORD PRODUCT) since we've had the car (about 1 1/2 years) it will not switch to "MAX" cooling which we all know is recurculated air and a higher fan speed:it will stay on the normal setting, even though we move the switch to "MAX" also the blend door-if thats what you call it must not be shutting as we can smell real strong exhaust smells when behind a smoking vehicle coming through the system, any thoughts?

The fan speed doesn't increase - it just sounds that way because the recirculate door opens into the passenger footwell, and you can HEAR the fan better.
You probably have a vacuum leak in the line or the vacuum motor for the fresh/recirculate door. I don't know where it is on the car, but look in the engine compartment on the R side rear.
