460 build

I have a 460 engine in my pickup that is being scraped. I would like to take this and a c6 transmission to put into my mud truck. It has a stock 351w with 39" tires and it'll barely pull itself out of a hole. I know it needs gears as the 355 open is not working well.

I would like to build a good engine here with the most torque I can get out of it. I have about $1000 for it and would like to know what I should do. I have up right headers for it, has an aftermarket cam in it, but not sure of the specs and have no tools to measure lift and duration. I'd like advice on a good cam, intake and heads for it. It's all stock right now except for the 750 Holley and those mentioned above.

Ok, the 460 responds pretty well to a little more compression. There are two ways to go about it, the early heads (D0VE-C I think were the good ones) or use pistons with a shallow dish in your engine. Change the timing chain to either a pre-72 or you can use the later EFI roller chain. Either one sets the cam straight up.

Edelbrock makes several nice manifolds, you want a dual plane for better torque and probably don't need EGR. Carburetor, contrary to a lot of people, you don't need a big carb, believe it or not a 600 cfm works good, if you can find one, a 1969 428CJ carb really lights one of these up.

Cam, go for a torque cam, moderate duration, fair amount of lift, long tube headers. On your gear, I don't know what diameter tires you are going to use, but keep in mind, this isn't a small block, it's big, heavy and in mild form really doesn't need or like to be turned real high. My engine is basically stock, running 3:55 gears and 215/85R-16 tires. It has more than enough torque to light all 4 rear tires.

The 750 is what came with it, so that's what I'm going to use. I figure I'll change the timing set to a later efi with it set straight up. Already have headers. I will look around for a dual plane intake. The truck has 39" tires on it. After this work, I'll get it in the truck and see how I like it with the 3.55s. I know I'm either going to weld the rear or find a good ls to put in it

JY near me has a early 1970-something Country Squire woodie with a 429 4V... I look at that and wonder to myself how valuable that is...?
