TV question
I'm wondering about what to look doe in a TV that will work with 'normal' shows.
We've got a couple of (very ) cheap flatscreens, and they're OK. But they do tend to suck on the wide shots in football and on some cartoons. On most other stuff they look pretty good. ( As long as I keep them on the narrow picture setting).
They're 720s with 60 hz refresh, which I realize is pretty low end.
But, I don't care about HD. I'd just like to know what to look for that will perform at the same level as the old CRTs in situations as described above.
I wondered if there are modes that can be set to make the standard definition stuff look better. I've checked out the menus on these, and there's nothing there that helps. But, as I mentioned, they are low end 19 inchers.
This is nothing urgent, but I'd appreciate any thoughts. My career was in electronics and software, but I never have really bothered to sort out the details on flatscreens.
Thanks,
hj
I can barely stand to watch SD anymore--my eyes are so used to HD (I mostly watch on a 6 year old 40" 720p60 LCD).

Whether the 'box' is on SD or HD, the picture is the same, quality wise.
The difference that I've noticed (with my 'bad' eyes) is that in "SD" mode, the picture just doesn't fill the screen.
There are black bars on each side of the picture in "SD" mode.
HD. . . . Beee-Eeeeeeee-A-U-Tee-Full picture!!
In comparison, our 2003 model Sony rear projection tv is just. . . . 'eh', so what?
(I see a new Samsung 50" or 55" class in my family room's near future.)
