Technical Engine Question. I NEED Your Advice!!

I am ordering a new E150 van with the 5.4L engine. I will probably never complete the conversion to CNG or LPG. However, Ford offers the CNG/LPG Prep Package, which includes "Hardened Exhaust & Intake Valves and Hardened Valve Seats." It may included a few other items, but they don't say what those might be. The package is only $315.00. QUESTION: Let's say this package was FREE, would YOU go for it? Is it good to have the hardened valves & seats, even though you may never convert to CNG or LPG? I would go for it, just in case gas goes to $10.00 a gallon, but is there a chance that having this package and running it with gasoline will cause me problems down the road? If it was free, would YOU opt for it? Thanks for your comments.

I see no down side to that package, this would make it a true flex fuel vehicle, do you know if the regular fuel tank would stay in the van and augment the conversion or if it gets removed and you run on cng alone, also as far as the hardened valves and seats go, I think that the engine would probably never have an issue. Natural gas does run much cleaner than gasoline and is cheaper, alot of this depends on the total cost of the conversion and the miles you expect to put on the vehicle, I think one other benefit to running cngis lower maintenaince cost in regards to oil changes.

No, I wouldn't bother tearing into my engine unless there was a reason. If you're going through the money and effort to prep for change, then do the change!

Why not! Options are always good to have.

I think the OP is talking about getting one already done at the factory, NOT tearing into an engine and changing it....

If its free its for me! Less you would have to fool with later should you decide to do the change.

The modified motor for LP/CNG will be a tougher motor to withstand the dry gas. It won't change the gasoline cold start up wear, but will have tougher rings, valves and valve seats. Probably also valve guide changes. The motor oil tends to thicken when burning them.

i looked at one a year or so ago. then went in to the head service guy and he said theres no such thing all the parts are the same they just get an extra $300 to $400 dollars out of you. if its a flex fuel to Bergen with don't throw any money at it! he also told me any LPG set up i buy, will have to come with all the set up stuff needed to do what your going to do so why buy it twice? so i never got it and never put LPG on it.
