I am putting my vette aside this summer to fix up a 1988 bronco 5.8L i just bought over the winter. I have a new rebuilt 1990 bronco 5.8L with a mild cam that i will be dropping in about 2 weeks. I also bought headers, generation 3 bosh 21lb fuel injectors. Before i drop the engine how much of a difference does an ignition system make as far as hp/torque and fuel economy. I am also looking for a way to run cold air, other then cutting and placeing scoops on the hood. If anyone has any ideas it would be great to hear them.:-X01 Has anyone changed there rear end ratio's, and what is stock for a 1988 bronco if anyone knows?
I also bought a throttle body spacer, but if anyone has any other ideas on what I can do before i drop this engine in, please let me know. I did browse the post and found some good info, so thanks in advance for your posts.:D
What year is your vette? Whats the brand of headers you are throwing on this engine? Who makes the cam, and what are the specs? I run a 5.8 too, and I am just curious. As for upgrading to a hot ignition (I will assume MSD unless you say otherwise, they are the best in my book)...they say that you will gain 13 HP/ 15 ft lbs Torque with their Ignition amplifier. I would recommend their TFI coil as well if you do in fact go down that road. I hope to add both to my 96 over the summer. As the combustion becomes more efficient, you will probably increase your mileage a bit, but I wouldnt bank on huge gains. I know some guys here run them, so maybe they can shed some light on the actual mileage gains, if any. What does your stock airbox situation look like? Im not too familiar with the 87-91. Does it suck from right above the grille? I know my 96 does, and thats probably one of the better setups out there. It is truly a 'cold air' kit. Personally, I just run a high flow filter in mine. It seems to do the trick. If you take a look at the sticker in your door jamb, it should give you an axle code. That will determine what you have for gearing. AFAIK, most broncos came with 3.55s from the factory. Hopefully I can find some money to throw some 4.10s in mine (still have the stock 3.55s). I ran a throttle body spacer on a 01 F150 and didnt find any noticeable gains, just alot of noise from the air twirling around it. It didnt bothered me enought to pull it out, but I came close. What are your plans for this truck? That can help us determine any other kinds of upgrades that you might want/need.
Chunk the TB spacer - it's dead weight. For real performance/mileage boosts, read Project MPG. You can find the ratio by either reading the first 4 digits of the second line on the axle tag, or by the AXLE code that Rich mentioned.
My vette is a 1993 40th anerv. and i plan on keeping the bronco for a long time. I bought headman street headers, 2 turb mufflers, and i am going to buy some free flow cats. Thanks again for the responce, oh and the truck is mainly an everyday truck. But i am in the firedept so I need something that can kind of move in any conditions. It worked at well in the snow this year. Thanks for the web page it showes alot off good stuff. One question, is am confused about the trany. Is that an add on to the c6 to help fuel economy? If so were can you buy one?
Yes, that gear splitter effectively gives you six gears. The motor doesnt have to work as hard at speed because of the 'new gears'. It becomes a much more efficient machine on the highway. I dont know where you can buy one. You might want to find an email on that site and ask them whose item it is. It might be something from Advanced Adapters. I see you have two mufflers on this truck...how do you have the exhaust system run on your truck? Duals? If so, duals out the back, or sides? You said youre a firefighter right? You might want to give this site a once over. You might get some ideas from it (I thought it was interesting at the least) http://www.projectresponder.com/
I will take a pic in about 2 weeks when i am done with the exhaust. A friend and myself have thought of a way, and i will share it with you once I am done. I might run it out the back even thought i may smell some fumes, or out the side. And thanks for that website it was cool.
If you run it out the back and ever plan on having the back window open, you won't just smell SOME fumes, you will smell LOTS of fumes. Besides it's the stuff in the exhaust that you can't smell that kills you.
