Check the black ground wire that runs from the controler to the engine to be sure it is clean and tight. I hope you used Motorcraft gps, if not the plugs may be bad already.

Recheck all connections for clean and tight, including those at glowplugs. Make sure no burnt/corroded wires.
Autolite plugs may only last one start.

Have a read threw this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...le-system.html , a lot of info on your style glow plugs. If you used Autolight plugs, they might have burned up on the first cycle. Check them to see if they are good. If they are good, you might have gotten a faulty new controler. Did the old controler work like it should?

Sorry I didn't see this post before I posted above. The light staying on of 10 seconds sounds about right, depending on the air temps. If the rapid clicking comes about after the light goes out, this is also normal. It is for the "after glow" to help a cold engine run smoother, by keeping the glows warm, after start up.

You really need to remove those Autolite plugs and replace them with the Motorcraft/Beru ZD 9's while you still can. The Autolites are notorious for burning up quick and swelling up at the tips. If one of those tips breaks off while the plug is still in the motor you're going to regret ever trying to save a few $ on those god forsaken plugs.

i was wrong on the light. it stays on for half a second and goes out, then starts clicking all the plugs read 1 ohm. no open circuits. just rechecked everything. the old controller worked fine till the plugs went bad. thos were 3 beru, 1 champion, and 4 bosch. i have autolite for today, advanced auto has motorcraft on order for 2mro. i havent had a problem with the autolite 1109 plugs, ac delco was the last set with the flat blade and i upgraded to the pin style.

this is my first diesel and i need all the help i can get

Motorcraft/Beru ZD 9's are the only way to go. Other GP's are a gamble. You can find them om ebay or Oreilly also has them. Check them with a multi meter for continuity. That will tell the story good or bad. Also it doesn't mean they have to be all bad, just a few will stop the system from working properly.
