I've got what may seem like a minor, goofy problem with my coolant temperatrure gauge. I have a 1985 F250, 351W 2barrel and a month or so ago the temp gauge quit working, stayed pegged below the cold mark and never moved. This afternoon I checked it out with multimeter by the procedure in the Chilton manual. That showed the gauge and circuit were OK and the sender was bad. Got a new sender and screwed it in, hooked it up and now when I turn the ignition on the temp gauge needle pegs out at the other end, above hot. When I turn the ignition off the needle moves back to the cold mark.
When I bought the new sender the threads were wrapped in what appears to be teflon pipe tape. Since there is only one wire to the sender I suspect it grounds throught the threads to the block. The old sender had traces of tape on it but I wonder if I should take the new one out and scrape the tape off the threads. I'd appreciate any help I can get.
