Question Another A/C problem

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer, V6. My A/C does not cool when on at any setting. The A/C compressor pulley spins and the outer flange continuously clicks, starts, clicks, stops. Is this the proper operation? It could have leaked freon and is empty and now I can't tell anymore. Can I check for the leak and how? Where?

Another A/C problem

there is a real possibillity that a fair amount of refrigerant has leaked out the cliking is the clutch egaging and then kicking right back out (prbly)
the system has a self protection and will not alow itself to operate after X amount has been lost.

Do you have a set of Gages for 134a and are u familar with refrgeration /a/c stuff / vacum pumps/dye injector?

Another A/C problem

The low pressure cutoff switch causes the clutch to cycle on/off. As the previous poster noted, the refrigerant level is too low. Have the system recharged and they can do a leak test at the same time. (They are required to check r12 systems for leaks, but with r134a, I don't know if leak testing is required, so ask to have it done.)
