Making 2 into 1

This is my first post, of what is most likely many to come. I'm sure this question has been asked before but since I'm a newbie to older Ford trucks, I'm clueless at this point. Please bear with me.

I have a 56 F100 and a 53 3/4 ton. The plans are to put the 53 cab on to the 56 frame. Plans include a Volare IFS.

The two questions I have at is point are:

1) Is putting the 56 cab on to the 53 frame pretty much a bolt-on procedure or are there other things I should take into consideration?

2) Assuming it is stock, what can I expect the 56 rear end to be?

What is wrong with the 56 cab? It should bolt right on.

The 56 would have a Dana 44. Good solid rearends. It would have a ratio of either 3.92 or 4.27.

I'm confused... Are you putting the 53 cab on the 56 frame or the other way around? Not that it should be a big deal either way, just not sure what your trying to do. Is one of the cabs junk or one of the frames better and you want the look of the '56. A little more info would be helpful....

Okay, here goes. Hopefully this will help clear things up.

I have a 53 F250 and a 56 F100. I want to end up with a 53 F100. The plans are to put the 53 cab and front clip on to the 56 frame. The 56 F100 is nothing but a donor (which will be mainly the frame and box).

In the process, I will be installing a Valore IFS, tilt steering, and forward tilting hood. Most likely, other modifications will occur during the project.

I will be doing all the work, including painting. I just don't have any experience with older Ford pickups.

"The 56 F100 is nothing but a donor"

56s aren't bad donors, but the doors and windshield are pretty useless.

Welcome to FTE. The 53 cab should mount up just fine.

Why do you want to get rid of the 56 cab? If for personal reasons thats up to you. but all 4 years of those trucks are good build ups. When you are all done if you have a good passanger side fender let me know. My 54 fender has holes in it.
PS
If the 56 cab is bad and you want to relocate gas tank why not hafe 56 donate that part of cab to cover 53 fuel spout.

Aekisu,
Welcome to FTE! I was in your shoes not long ago: a newby with litle to NO prior experience. Anyway, the gang here on FTE are SUPER! There are NO dumb questions, so ask away! FTE has helped me MANY times, so I'll perpetuate the legacy as best I can with your questions.

The '53-'56's are, for your "cab switching"considerations, interchangeable. That part won't be too difficult.

The Volare suspension (with torsion bars) will also work well. Make certain you know how to locate the torsion bar components; get help, get a professional... whatever, but that's key. Other options, FYI, on IFS for you: Dakota; Mustang II, Camaro, and a few others depending on your level of confidence with "fabrication".

Best of luck with your project truck. We LOVE pix here, so keep 'em coming as you progress with your projects!

Regards,
Daryl

Thanks DS and Kurt

Kurt, my personal preference is for the 53 but that's not the real issue. The 53 is running. At best, the 56 could be called a parts car (or in this case, a parts truck). BTW, I have :-staun 3 left and 3 right rear fenders.

You reminded me that the gas tank is another issue. I would like to get it out of the cab, sitting between the frame. I would assume others have thought of doing the same. What are people doing about the gas tank?

Aekisu,
Welcome to FTE! Looks like you have a good project gong there..

The cab swap should be fairly straight forward. Cab mounts are consistent from '53 through '56.

The rearend ratio (if stock) should be stamped on the VIN plate attached to the "A" pillar of the driver's side cab of the '56. The VIN plate for the '53 is on the inside of the glove box door. These will tell you engine size, axle ratio, color, VIN and propably many other things that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Good Luck and keep us posted with progress pics.

Aekisu,

Re: relocating gas tank...

Many have done this, including myself. I measured the area behind the rear axle melon between the frame and looked for a gas tank (fuel cell) with dimensions that would fit. Then, to secure it in place, I made square U-shaped brackets and welded those to the frame. I ran a 3/16" piece of solid rubber between the support rail and the aluminum tank for safety (no metal-on-metal rubbing, no spark, no fire!... and so it wouldn't digress to that notoious Ford rattle ! ).

www.gastanks.com has tanks, as does www.summitracing.com

BTW, DON"T get a top-fill tank; get one with the input spout on the top side, not the top itself. I made this mistake and it was a pain in the **** to make the filler neck angle work.

Hope this helps! Write back or E-mail me if I can help further...
Daryl
