Thinking about upgrade

I'm thinking about selling the old '93 and going with something newer. I've found a '97 supercab (3-door) 2X4 at a dealership that has a 5.4L w/ 5-speed with 76K miles. I'm not sure of the rear end gear ratio.

I like a 5-speed for pulling the boat so no problems there. What 5-speed tranny did they put in those models and how reliable were they? Also, what could I expect for fuel mileage in this truck? In my '93 (5.0L E4OD) I get 15mpg at best on the HWY.

They are asking $12,000 for it, but according to kbb.com the retail is $10,850 so I know I would talk them down before considering this seriously.

I have no reason to believe '93 is in bad shape (mechanically), but it's getting the usual wheel well rust and has 128K miles. I know that's not too many miles, but I'm going on a 14 hour (one way) trip pulling the boat this July and the last thing I want is a breakdown!

Thanks for any advice you guys have.

KJ

Suggest NADA for price. More realistic. Price is high, as you found out.

You may get as high as 20 mpg unloaded with the new 5.4L. I got 19.2 with mine with the automatic on the trip to VA Beach.

You will like the handling better, as well as the larger cab.

Ooh, 5 mpg better than the old '93 5.0L sounds good to me!

How much more cab room is there in the newer body style supercab versus my 10 year old supercab tank?

Also, how about that tranny? Are there any particular clutch and/or tranny problems that are common in these models?

I don't want to trade into new troubles if I can avoid them.

NADA showed $11,600 retail for the '97 and $4600 for mine. I guess if I talked them into $7000 (maybe $6500) plus my truck it would be a decent deal. I'm just thinking the old '93 is quickly nearing the point that it's going to be worth diddly squat and if I sell it now I can get a little something out of it.

Handling? Is there a huge difference in ride comfort between the old Twin-I-beam and the new IFS?

Finally, how much difference in resale value is there between AOD and 5-speed? Am I shooting myself in the foot if I get a manual tranny?

Thanks again.

The last time I knew the 5.4 didn't have a 5 speed backing it, only 4 spd autos in the F150's. The 4.6 and the 4.2 have 5 spds standard. The manual tranny is the M5OD. The auto could be the 4R70W (AOD-E)- door jab code 'U.' or 4R100 (E4OD) - door jamb code 'E.'

Check the engine again, I am sure you'll be looking at a 4.6 if it is indeed a V-8 with manual. Check the 8th digit in the VIN code. The W for 4.6's and L for 5.4's.

I called the dealership and it is a 5.4 L, but the add was wrong. It does have a 4 speed auto behind it. The weekend is too busy to go truck shopping, so I'm planning to go drive it next week. I'll post the results.
