Question Transmission compatability??

Will a 4 spd manual transmission (granny low) that was originally behind a 390 work behind a small block engine (351C to be specific)??? I know I'll need a different bellhousing and some other accessories etc, but right now, I'm just wanting to know if it will actually bolt up ok and engage ok with the engine!

Also, I already have a small block bellhousing from a Mustang that had a toploader - will that bellhousing work?

Thanks for the help!

Transmission compatability??

This is what I know:
351C/400M have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a 460.
So the smallblock bell won't work.
I'm not positive and I could be wrong, but I think that the NP435 and the T18 had different bolt patterns where they connected to the bellhousing.
They're both strong tranny's. The NP has deeper gears (the Ford version is 6.69:1 first)

351C and small blocks have the same bellhousing pattern.
351M and 400's have the 460 bolt pattern except for some 72 400's had the small block pattern. NP 435 and T-18 interchange in the truck. Be careful on the length of the pilot and the transmission input shaft. 360/390's have a shorter pilot length than the small block trans. What this means is that using the shorter pilot length 360/390 trans behind a small block/351C, there is not enough of the input shaft on the pilot bushing and eventually, you will wipe out the pilot bearing and input bearing of the trans. I am not sure about the toploader bellhousing, the bolt patterns on each end are correct, the length may be a problem or maybe not. I have both setups at home and I can check this out for you. I will get back to you on this.

Thanks for the info. I knew that the same input shaft length issue existed for the top-loaders but wasn't sure if the truck transmissions had the same difference or not.

I look forward to any further info you can offer.

Well, I said I might be wrong. And I guess I was.
Sorry 'bout that, I stand corrected.

Transmission compatability??

Here's what I found,
First Mustang toploaders used two different bellhousings for small blocks, an aluminum one for 302's 68 and up, and a cast iron one for 351's 69 and up. The cast iron bellhousing used in the 71 Mustang is the same part number used in the F100 with the 302. The early Mustangs used an aluminum bellhousing that took a smaller clutch, I would probably stay away from that one. In any event what all this means is that yes the bellhousings all physically interchange between small block, 351C for Mustangs and Trucks. I checked myself with both an aluminum and cast iron Mustang bellhousings on a NP 435 and yes they line up perfectly. It looks like yours will fit. Make sure you use the right starter and flywheel for the bellhousing. The truck transmission for the 302's and 300's appear to be the same. The 360/390's have the shorter pilot. There of course is a big difference between 4x4 and 2x4 trans also ( no speedo gear on early 4x4 trans) Hope this helps
