F250 Engine

Thinking of an F250 CC SB 4x4 manual; which engine do you prefer and why (7.3L, 7.5L, or 5.8L)?

Depends on your intended use.

Well, I am frustrated by the TQ and HP of my current truck ('93 4.9L 5spd 4x4 Reg Cab Short bed), so I would like something with a little more go. 4wd is rarely used - only in snow and light off road. Rarely do I have a load in the bed. Might do some light towing a few times a year. I want something with as close to bulletproof reliablity and durability I can get. Ease and cost of maintenance and repair would be nice. Reasonable fuel economy would be nice too. I know you can't have everything...

I was thinking a 5.8L stroked to 408ci with a 5 speed manual, but wanted to hear from people about what they liked and didn't like in their experiences.

The 7.3 provides everything that you have listed you want in your next truck. My old idi got 20 mpg if I drove like my grandmother, was as easy to work on as an old carbed gasser and they are known to be extremely tough.

Im sure the powerstroke would be the same, but I have no personal experience with them.

I was considering the 7.3L IDI (or IDI turbo) probably as much as the 5.8L. I think I would like to swap in the 6 speed trans from the '99 and newer trucks though. The powerstroke seems like it would be less reliable and harder to work on.
