i took my pistons and rods outa my block about a cuple weeks ago with intentions of boring mymotor out but now i just wanna put the pistons back in cause i am rebuilding a 460 instead so do the pistons have to go back in the same spot? if yes how can i tell which one they go in or cant i? thanks kevin
well if i had the bearing caps on em that would work but theyre all mixed up too......what would happen if i put the piostons in the wrongs spots and didnt have the same bearing caps on and everything?
If the crank and rods dont have any bend or twist it wont matter where you put them. If they are bent, putting them in the wrong place will re-bend them in a different direction.
You can't "mix 'n match" rods/rod caps without having the whole assembly reconditioned as a unit, i.e. honed at the machine shop. Each rod and each cap will have the cylinder number stamped on it and the numbers should be on the same side of the rod/cap assembly when they are correctly assembled. If you haven't disassembled the pistons from the rods then you should have no problem replacing them in the same cylinders. Also remember that Ford numbers cylinders different from other manufacturers. 1/5 piston & rod share the same crank journal, 2/6, 3/7 and 4/8.
The rods and pistons have to go back into the holes they came from. The # side of the rod faces the outside of the block of the side it goes on #'s 1-4 will face the right side of the block, 5-8 will face the left ( drivers ) side. The bearings also need to go back where they came from and the backs need to be clean and dry. The rings will need to have the gaps spaced apart as well. Main caps will also need to be put back exactly as they were removed and in the proper order on the block. If none of this or Bill_beyer's instructions are followed then it will be a complete waste of time putting it back together.
The rod caps are # according to which cylinder they came from. The right ( passenger) side bank is # 1-4 ( front to back) and the left side is 5-8. The rod also has the # stamped on it. # sides go together and they face the outside of the block on the side they came from. Th emain caps are also # but the #'s aren't always the order they came from. I rebuilt a 390 once that had the #1,2,&4 caps mixed up and line bored at the factory. I didn't mark the caps before removing them and that thing gave me fits when I put it back together. I now make sure to check for out of place main caps before disassembling a motor.
I installed my rods starting with the front most cylinder alternating side to side front to back. so when I look down at my crank the #'s run numericaly front to back. I lucked out cause my engine is still in the stand. I'm glad this forum is around. Thanx
