I'm curious as to what setting your heater control is on when this bang happens? Mine stays on max a/c most of the time and I've never heard it make any noises.
Why would anyone change it from Max a/c? That's just weird.

Even when it gets a little chilly I just turn the warm ****, it still stays on max a/c
It's a humidity thing I guess.
Jeff, I'm trying to be sensitive to the 49 cold states...cold is for beer.
well now that i think about it i guess its more of a pop sound. like i said i have only heard it 3 times. i started the truck this morning and no sound at all and i did turn all the air off befor starting.
ok well i let it sit for a little while in the parking lot at work and had a guy come out with me and start it while i looked under the hood. i did not get any sound so i am completely stumped. i tried with the heat on and off and no difference. one thing i did notice that will have to be addressed is the smaller starter solenoid to the left of the fuel bowl, one of the terminals was smoking and melting. anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
This is the glow plug relay. If I recall correctly, it's the smaller one, but not 100%. Besides, the AIH shouldn't be coming on unless certain factors are at play, which shouldn't be there at startup. The GPRs are notorious for going bad. I think there's a napa part number that works best, but don't know what the number is. It's not a part number that's referenced to our trucks. Might find it in the tech folders... Or maybe someone else will know.
ok yea i have been looking all over the place the last 10 min. and that is the glowplug relay. thank you for your help and the picture. the next question is, is it just smoking and melting because it is going bad or a bad connction or do i have an electrical problem

Mine was bad when I bought the truck, so I couldn't answer for sure. I tested it by jumping a wrench across the terminals. When I took it off, I could see where one of the terminals had fried (melted and charred plastic). So I'm pretty sure it would have smoked like you're describing yours as it was going bad.
Might want to read through this before you get a replacement. IIRC, I went with the GPR 109 from napa (have to request the part number specifically) and still works after 2 years.
Clay (riffraff) has the GPR with free shipping going on right now. He even has the upgraded Stancor one. I've heard nothing but good about the Stancor, its also bigger in size.
