Question temp control panel

On my 88 XLT, the slide on the temp control panel that allows me to switch from defrost to mix, floor or panel was always a bear to slide until a few months ago. Something inside there snapped...and it seems to be stuck on defrost. That was fine during the winter months but now I would like to get some better circulation with the AC on instead of it running thru the defrost vents. Any helpful hints on getting that panel off? Such as where any tabs are so I do not break anything off and avoid any problems getting it back together? More importantly, any ideas as to where the problem might lie? Thanks a bunch!

It's not in the panel. Follow the cables that come out under the passenger side under the dash. Unfortunately, it's probablly the one that goes to the top of the dash that has come loose from its metal clip. You might be able to see and even reach it thru the glove box if you fold it ALL the way down.
