I've been looking around for info on the broken exhaust stud problem and and have a few more questions.
First, has anyone tried to replace the studs with a stronger stud? Sounds like a good idea but I'd rather break studs than pull the threads out of the head. How about a more ductile material?
Second, is there a gasket that may be a little more resilliant and allow the manifold to move around a bit and still seal?
Third, is this condition less prone to those running headers? (Yes honey, I NEED to buy headers)
Fourth, if I do nothing but replace the broken studs how long before I'll have to do it again?
Probably get more responses in the V10 forum, but I strongly suspect that the conditions you use your truck in greatly affect the lifespan of the studs. My truck is over 8 years old and has 110K miles on it and has the original studs, but some of the guys in the snowbelt have to replace them at half that. Maybe it's just luck of the draw, but maybe not...
I read a lot of old threads and ended up with the Banks Power Pack. My exhaust had cracks and needed replacing anyway. I was going to put new studs in until I ran across someone who did that, and after a year, they were starting to break again. I've seen some guys with 3 years on the Banks headers and no problems. There are some threads with pics in the Excursion section. The heat shields were confusing, so the pics really helped.
I have 128k on my F350, yes i live in NJ where they salt for rain in the winter. I replaced the exhaust manifolds with Gibson stainless headers at aound 30k just because i didnt want to worry about problems down the road. I REUSED the stock studs BUT i removed them all and coated them with silver high temperature marine anti-seize and their all holding up and look like new still.
If not go with ARP they sell high tensile steel or stainless steel studs for our trucks
Still debating if I want to put headers on or not eventually, but I was going to buy a set of the Stage 8 Locking Header Bolts if I did. Found a set on Summit Racing for $70 i believe.
They will rot faster than the stock studs (if you live in a salt state) and no need for them i reused my stock studs then checked the tightness 1000miles later and then 3000miles after that. After the first check they never got loose and that was a good 90k ago
